Bringing smiles to hospitalized children on our way to Freeport
As the Big Top tent and the Smirkus crew head to Freeport, ME for 4 upcoming shows Thursday and Friday, the troupers head to the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital in Portland to bring some circus joy to young patients there. As much fun as our troupers have performing in the ring, they’ll tell you in a minute that this hospital visit is one of their favorite “performances” of the season! The visit is arranged each year by our presenters at the Merriconeag Waldorf School in Freeport.
Like many Waldorf schools, Merriconeag incorporates circus arts as part of its curriculum. Proceeds from Smirkus provide fuel for that excitement by supporting the circus arts program; the school was able to buy a low wire, diabolos, unicycles and juggling pins last year. Moneys earned also help fund the tuition assistance program.
*Our circus presentation has become the hub for our connection to the greater performing arts community in Portland,” says Merriconeag spokeswoman Trace Salter. ” We bring in major artists for Master Classes, including Smirkus’s own Jesse Dryden. We also have a Circus Arts Camp that follows our Smirkus shows and over half the campers come from outside the school.”
“This community outreach is all possible,” she added, “because Circus Smirkus continues to awe and inspire our students and the greater community.”
Thank you, Merriconeag. Hello, Freeport!
