Down the Road With Former Smirko Cam Zweir

When you are a circus performer, ‘home’ is quite often open to interpretation. For Circus Smirkus alumnus Cameron Zweir, ‘home’ currently changes on a daily basis!

Hailing from Holyoke, MA, this 18-year-old acrobat was recently cast in the National Broadway Tour of Pippin. Joining the cast of Pippin was definitely a case of “right person, right place, right time” for Cam. We asked him how he ended up on this adventure of a lifetime.

“They were looking for a base, and someone I had trained with suggested they contact me,” he said. “Next thing I know, I’m in rehearsal!”

For the past three summers, Cam called the Smirkus Big Top Tour home, where he cultivated the circus and performance skills that would prepare him for his first professional experience. Although he spent years as a gymnast and performed in musical theater, he had not been a circus performer before becoming a trouper.

“I gained most of my circus and performance skills at Smirkus. I learned what it’s like to be a professional in the real world. I gained my love for the circus arts and performing at Smirkus,” he said.

Cam’s advice for other young circus performers?

“Enjoy every second of it because it won’t last forever. And as professional as Smirkus is, don’t forget to be a kid. There’s lots of time to be grown up later. “

That’s powerful advice from someone performing in a show about a young man trying to find his “corner of the sky.”
