The Final Week at Advanced Camp

Editor’s Note: This post was written by Camp Photographer & Communications Assistant Will Ciardelli

Things have been busy at Smirkus Camp over the last couple weeks! Advanced Camp session has entered its final week and as we move towards our showcase this coming Friday, we are now running acts in their entirety, and finalizing the creative elements of our upcoming show. This includes costumes, the order of the show and even puppets! The staff and campers built and painted puppets that are essential elements in the show they created. There is a large dragon which is manned by 8 people and there are two birds that are each controlled by two people. We cannot wait to see them in the show on Friday, it should be an amazing thing to witness, since camp hasn’t used puppets in many years.

Our Individual Acts session campers are preparing their solo acts which will also be performed on Friday for pick up day, and they too have they been working hard. The coaches have been helping them decide on music, and the message behind the act they have been creating, as well as teaching them many founding principles of building and creating a standalone act. We are thrilled to see what our Individual Acts campers have developed with in the last few weeks.

Recently, we had one of the campers favorite evening activities “Zombie Apocalypse”. In this game, staff members dress up in post apocalyptic attire and find roles and characters to play during the game. This could include a mad scientist trying to build a machine to fix the spreading virus, or a witch who offers an antidote if you follow their instructions and tasks. There is a patient zero who starts as the first zombie and like the game manhunt work to tag and “infect” as many players as they can before the evacuation transport leaves thus. finishing the game. The staff and campers really get into it and have a really fun time. We cannot wait to do it again next summer!
